The Official 2014 NBA Draft Week Thread

The week of the draft is usually crazy with rumors, trades, teams moving up, teams moving down, smokescreens, player promises, agents lying to GMs and GMs lying to agents.

Whatever news or rumors you hear, plop it into this thread for us to discuss.

The next few days are going to be so much fun!

    WE READY

I have no idea who i want.

I have no idea who i want.

I so feel this way too. I am also so glad it's not my decision and really think that we're in good hands with Cho steering the ship. Having said that, I am sure I will feel (appropriately or not) real disappointed if we pick one of the guys that I feel (and what I feel is really not that relevant to the process; I get that :)), is a tier beneath where we're selecting. But if we take Saric, McDermott, Stauskas, Harris, Randle, Gordon or Smart at the 9; I'll be plenty happy. Beyond that, as long as we get some significant potential shooting at either the 9 or 24, I'll still be happy.

I know that many of you have grown more comfortable with the thought of the Hornets drafting McDermott.

    But he still terrifies me.

I just hope we do not pick Harris or Gordon with the 9th pick.

See that wouldn't bother me. Drafting Hood or Hairston or LaVine however....

With the first pick in the 2014 NBA draft, the Cleveland Cavaliers select Clint Capela from Ijasfhslknmld, France

I'm just really excited to see what happens. It's going to be a crazy draft and we get to stay engaged all night with the 3 picks.

Trades will be crazy. And then free agency is just a few days after.

I really think we stay put at 9 and take Stauskus... Although I think we may draft Lavine and try to sign a free agent shooter and allow Lavine to develop. Big risk though

This is an incredible difficult draft to read.  Embiid's injury creates a ton of uncertainty at the top of that draft that likely wouldn't have been there were he healthy. Then, any number of interesting players could be available at 9, none of which are sure things but a wrong decision could mean yet another huge missed opportunity.  We can either hit the jackpot or once again succumb to disappointment.  I'm hoping for the former.

It's almost impossible to rank some of these guys.

Please no McDermott..... I just have a feeling that's who it's gonna be though. I've been trying to get excited about him but I just can't. Right now, I want Julius Randal of any of the obtainable players.

I think Stauskas has a better chance of being drafted by Charlotte than McDermott, honestly. I mean, think about it. McDermott would be slotted in at SF, and MKG has fixed the mechanics of his shot to make it look somewhat presentable. Quicker, higher release, almost no hitch, squared hips...whether or not he can do it in games is obviously still a question, but he stands a much better chance of hitting open jumpers than he did last year. So MKG becomes our defensive wiz on the wing, and still manages to score 11-12 PPG. McDermott would be crowding that spot up, especially considering the fact that Cho and Cliff are both talking like JT is a lock to be back next season.

Stauskas fills the need of a starting SG who can actually shoot. He can score from range off the dribble, reads screens well, has excellent handle and can oftentimes toy with defenders before putting a shot off. I think Staus has a slightly quicker release than McDermott too, though I could be wrong. They're both great shooters, but it's Stauskas that makes the most sense with MKG hopefully finally starting to come around.

Plus, if we don't have full faith in MKG yet (which we shouldn't until we see that shot in game action), we can draft Glenn Robinson III at 24. He's a surprisingly good shooter, a freak of an athlete (probably top 5 in this draft), a great defender, and he has chemistry with Stauskas. Or we could go Mitch McGary, who has a taller Kenneth Faried vibe. I'd prefer GRIII though, because of his athleticism, shooting, and insurance behind MKG, especially since MKG will still likely get into foul trouble.

If it's true McDermott and Staus are our two primary targets, Stauskas just makes more sense. What a lot of people overlook between Doug and Nik is passing as well...it's a weakness for Doug, and it's a strength for Nik, who could even play some point, and was a great playmaker for Michigan last season. Fantastic court vision.

Neither are good on D. I think both can get better since they're both coachable and extremely hard workers (look no further than the improvement in Stauskas' freshman and sophomore seasons).

Just my 2 cents. If we keep 9, I think the favorite to be picked has to be Stauskas, and I would be over the moon with that. At 24, unless Payne somehow slips there, GRIII is my pick. I also wouldn't mind Jordan Clarkson.

    what could go wrong?

Yeah I like Stauskas a lot.

Steve Clifford on winning trends in the playoffs

If the goal is to win ‘it’ (the championship), then look at San Antonio: They’ve got guys who can do both,” shoot from range and drive, Clifford said.

The greatness of Manu Ginobili is he’s an exceptional 3-point shooter (career 37 percent), and you can’t keep him out of the paint. (LeBron) James has made himself into a very good 3-point shooter (40 percent and 38 percent the past two seasons) with exceptional ability to drive the ball.

Stauskas was basically a 6'6 spot up shooter his first year in college and then took over ball handling after Trey Burke left as mentioned in this article about his Hornets workout.

"I had a lot more responsibility handling the ball and creating for the rest of our team,” said Stauskas, who was Big 10 Player of the Year.

“When I’m in the ball screen, I’m at my best. I’m really creative, I have a high basketball IQ and I’m unselfish – I like creating plays for other guys. And I can knock down shots".

“I got to the free throw line a lot, driving and hitting.”

That sounds very Manu-ish to me. Also in the article Coach Clif gushes over his NBA size which was something that really showed itself as a necessity during these NBA playoffs.

It seems like a match made in basketball heaven.

Pertinent Hornets info in bulleted format would also be acceptable.

My draft boner is already at full mast.

    Can't wait.

    People are sleeping on Payton

    19.3 pts 6.3 rebounds 5.8 assists

I read somewhere that Utah snuck Aaron Gordon in for a secret 2nd workout.

If they take Gordon at 5, how will that effect picks 6,7 and 8?

Dario Saric signed with turkish club Anadolu Efes. It's a three year contract and there is a an NBA-out option in 2016.

also read somewhere he is entirely in play for orlando at 4. could push embiid down to 6 or 7.

    I watched this today

A lot of interviews with Kemba which was cool, also filmed inside the Raptors draft room on the night, they thought we were taking Thompson at #7 if Biyombo had gone beforehand, just thought it was interesting that's all.

I wonder if Payton could sneak into the top 8.

I'd love to see a surprise or 2 in that top 8 to help Randle slide.

Yep.  Scratch him off the board, if he was ever on it that is.
