The Decline of Lance Stephenson

I think it's been discussed at length here all season, but the Lance signing has been a huge disappointment for us, and a horrible career move for him.

He has looked nothing like his Pacer self near the end of last season.

Where did his dribble-drive go? He got to the hoop all the time last season and almost never even tries to do that this season. He still has the athleticism so it seems like a mental issue.

HIs shooting % is atrocious, especially from 3, but he could at least make up for that with better drives to the hoop, getting to the FT line, or at least creating for other teammates.

I get that he's a bad fit with Kemba and that excuse seemd viable in the first couple months, but with Kemba out, his production is just as bad if not worse than the beginning of the year.

I really would like to move him at almost all costs. Getting nothing for him would not be smart, but his trade value is at an all time low.

I feel this is 100% mental. I think he feels lost here on offense. He does not dribble drive effectively because he seems to have switched into Rondo mode and lost his attackers mentality. I think if he strung together a few good games his mental issues would clear. I hope this break will help clear his head cause he is a good player who can help this team.

Can't disagree with any of this really.  I am not adamant for getting rid of him, but I wouldn't be too upset (depends on what we take back) if he is moved now or during the off-season.

Yes.  While, all other aspects of game are what we expected, shooting has been unexpectedly bad.  3P has been biggest fail...at least shooting a little fewer (21% of shots) than he did at Indiana (27%)..but Its been down across the board whether at the rim or free throw line.   Wonder if he's putting up bricks in practice?

Don't see us getting any interest in trade unless we give up a 1rst  to dump salary next year and we do not need to do this.  If team feels they absolutely cannot have Lance on team, do a Detroit Josh Smith waive and stretch,  Lance's next years 9 million guaranteed spread over 3 years.  Saves 6 million in next years 66 million cap,..the rest hitting when salary cap jumps to 90 million.  Expect many teams will be taking advantage of this anyhow.

First thing he has to do to begin the road to becoming a productive player again is to stop feeling sorry for himself, every time he makes a bad play or does not get a call he acts as if it is the end of the world, that has got to stop.  He needs to become mentally stronger first before he does anything else, every play and game is not gonna be amazing but the more he can will himself and the team to stay positive instead of hanging his head the better chance he will have at success down the road.

Seems like Lance has a routine. He makes a bad play, gives his teammate the "it was your fault" look, and then finally makes it down on defense and fouls somebody.

IDK, I can't pile onto a guy that's been nicked up with various injuries all year.  If he was healthy and throwing up bricks like Gary Neal for long stretches I'd be all for scapegoating him.

Why would you pile on Gary then?  Neal's missed a couple games to concussion and hamstring.  After starting the season 40%, 43% 3P...missed 4 games to shoulder injury has been 34% and 25% 3P since.

At this point, I'd be surprised to see Lance moved this season, but I think moving him this offseason should be a pretty big priority. Someone will have to be okay with taking a contract that could expire after next season unless the team wants him back, and that opens up $9 million for us. Find us a real shooting guard.

Because Gary started the season healthy, Lance did not.  Gary wasn't nearly as injury plagued as Lance has been.

Ragin - I think you're right so far, but remember it's the half way point of the season.

No one should fault "the way Lance looks at someone" - the guy suffers from RBF and it's not something to take lightly or read into.   The tabloid blog on his comment about Brooklyn was nothing more than nostalgia for his NY roots.

I think this thread should be renamed "The ascent of Lance Stephenson" - look for him to have a much improved second half of the season.   The guy is too talented and young to be considered a total bust - there's time!

i firmly believe there is not a market for lance. too many reports of different accounts of the same theme for the past 2 months. to move him would require attaching a sweetener and taking back a negative asset. it is better to hold on to him and hope he improves and if he doesn't move him next year as an expiring or just let him expire or buy him out super cheap. cho knows this too.

Seeing that this post is from you, I will guess that Lance is player B, since his stats appear to be the least impressive.

    Player A is CJ Miles.

    Player B is Lance Stephenson.

    Player C is Rodney Stuckey.

Miles and Stuckey were brought on to replace Stephenson for the Pacers.  CJ and Rodney combined are being paid a little more than half of what Lance is making this year.

Its an Indy theme.  Stuckey and CJ Miles.  Of course, if George was healthy, they wouldn't be averaging those numbers, but I wonder how Stuckey would've worked here instead of Lance as a big combo guard.

Do you remember when Jake Delhomme overnight completely lost the ability to play football? Watching Lance this season reminds me so much of that. When you watch him shoot, Sometimes it seems like he has never seen a basketball before.

Good analogy.  And while never having perfect form, so many of the shots are so far off, almost like he's got double vision and only aiming for the real basket half the time.

If he's still around, needs to forgo rapping in the off-season and join MKG with Mark Price.

he needs to learn how to play basketball. because aside from hitting the roll man with a good pass 30% of the time, he is actually a horrible basketball player.

I think I know why his game is suffering now.  In another life lesson from White Men Can't Jump:

I think I am pretty much Lance Stephenson, my jump shot has deserted me since November. Seriously, I haven't changed my game, I'm not doing anything different, I just have shot the ball atrociously but there is no particular reason. Just saying, same thing could be happening with Lance, other areas of his game have still sucked, don't get me wrong, but in terms of his shot it could just be natural
