PJ Hairston - YMCA Altercation

Seeing lots of posts on twitter saying that PJ punched a minor at a YMCA in Durham. Not sure how credible it is. Even if it is not true, it is disheartening that he would continue to be mentioned in things like this.

I'm guessing it wasn't a big deal either.

HOWEVER, PJ has to be smarter than that. It's not just a matter of how a person responds to life. It's learning not to be in situations where you'll have to respond.

Well, he wasn't arrested. There's that. If it was serious, he'd probably be in some cuffs.

I dunno, we'll probably never know what ACTUALLY happened unless someone posts a video. If the kid threw the first punch, I would've thrown back. Human nature. If P.J. started it, it's way more serious. Hopefully Hairston's agent is right and it's being blown out of proportion.

I feel like that's a hashtag I'm going to have to get used to this season.

Plus pickup games literally get physical all the time.

No doubt. Charlotte's "gathering more information" about what happened. Hope they get it under control, and I hope he comes into Charlotte and starts working out here. Bad things just happen to/around that dude in the middle of NC. Even if it's not a big deal, he's an NBA player now, AND he has a history of negative drama. Has to get this shit under control.

Yeah, they most definitely do. I've been in a few shoving matches. Nothing crazy, but I still have a nice little bump from a broken nose I got from an unnecessary elbow.

Still, like DNB said, Peej has got to be smarter. And Charlotte needs to tighten the leash. Now. No more of this bullshit. We're lucky the Melo signing is happening tonight, hopefully this whole thing will blow over with relatively little traction in the media.

*EDIT: I realized after I posted that last bit that it could sound kind of racist. Not my intent. You guys know what I mean. That's just the best way of saying it.

She's not telling the whole story. In Bonnell's article he has a quote from Pj's agent that said he shoved Pj then Pj shoved back. Then he punched Pj and Pj punched back, both punches connected.

Oops sorry wasnt on last page..didnt see the topic was already being talked about

From article by Jeff Goodman on ESPN,

"We were playing open gym and I was running up the court and he hit me in the forehead with his fist," said Northern Durham High rising senior Kentrell Barkley, who is being recruited by numerous mid-major college programs. "I walked up to him and asked him what happened and then he hit me again in the neck."

"Kentrell's team had beaten P.J. a few times and they were winning again," said Vince Phillips, a friend of Barkley's who played at Southern Durham High and just finished his freshman year at Coastal Carolina University on an academic scholarship. "P.J. was talking to him, then he got the ball, looked up the court and dribbled to Kentrell full-speed, threw his fist and then went and scored. Then he hit him again."

Phillips said there was a previous incident with another player on the court. "It's not like it was just one guy," Phillips said. "P.J. was looking for problems."

Barkley said that after he was hit the second time, several people broke up the altercation as the pair stood face-to-face. Barkley said that Hairston and a friend left prior to the arrival of the local police. Barkley, 17, filed a police report and told ESPN that he intends to press charges against Hairston despite not sustaining any injuries.

He-said/she-said. What is the kid going to say, "yeah, I fucking hit him."

I'm sure something happened, and I'm sure P.J. didn't just punch the kid for shits and giggles. I'm beginning to think this is one of those stupid stories that is way overblown because of who it revolves around.

I have no doubt P.J. did something stupid.  But if the police weren't even called, then it's just not as big of a deal as people are making it out to be. Shrug. Charlotte needs to just get him down here, tell him he's on thin ice, and force him to start taking his shit seriously by not playing pick-up games, where tempers flare up 100% of the time.

I'm guessing it wasn't a big deal either.

His first issue is he shouldn't be playing pickup games with high school kids.

Dude, this shit smells like a kid wanting to get publicity. Honestly. Even if this was Lance Stephenson, I wouldn't believe what these kids are saying.

This seems to be the biggest takeaway. I am all for giving "our guy" a lot of latitude but at the same time, I am not up for blind allegiance. Dude needs to be a hell of a lot smarter than putting himself in a situation that could end badly.

Yep. Time for Charlotte to shorten his leash and give him some kind of ultimatum.

Everyone should tweet their disappointment to him. Like, don't be a dick. Just be like, "we need you to be better and smarter," and make him feel like when a parent that tells you, "I'm not angry, I'm disappointed." Shame him into not being so stupid.

Speaking of parents, his mom is almost as tall as PJ. He's probably getting his ass kicked right now.

the only thing i'm upset about is the claim that PJ's team was losing.

My gut tells me to believe the HS kid.  Playing pick up games isn't the problem.  I play tons of pick up games.  I don't punch people because I am an adult.

You have to be a real jerk to punch someone over a pick up game.  I can't believe he didn't even make it to summer league without having problems.  We don't need this BS in our locker room.  Hope we just don't offer him a contract if he instigated the situation and sucker punched a HS kid.

I can't think of any incident in which P.J. was violent on the court while at UNC or Texas. Someone, please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm not throwing the book at him over a story of he-said/she-said. And I don't think it's ever going to be anything more than that. Knock on wood.

I'm cheering for P.J. to succeed. We need his abilities, and I want him to do well here. I think he did a great job after being booted from UNC. He really just needs to get his boundaries set, plant his roots in Charlotte, and be aware of the fact that he is constantly on thin ice if he starts anything.

Dude, this shit smells like a kid wanting to get publicity. Honestly. Even if this was Lance Stephenson, I wouldn't believe what these kids are saying.

    Five minutes of fame.

take it for what it's worth, but I saw some guy say on either twitter or Carolina huddle (I don't remember) said this kid has been jealous of PJ ever since PJ got drafted. But that guy could just be bullshitting, but he said he has some knowledge on the kid/situation

True, but when you have a NBA or big time college player, other guys will try to really give it to the guy and try to show him up.  It doesn't surprise me that this incident happened.  PJ just has to be smarter about who he is playing with.

Yeah, just goes further to show that everyone is telling a different story. If that IS true, it's absolutely no excuse for what P.J. did, because he shouldn't be playing pick-up games at a YMCA that's 2.5 hours from Charlotte, when he should be here practicing with the team and setting things down in Charlotte.

But yeah. Just a bunch of different stories. Gotta give P.J. a chance here before we start shelling out ultimatums like "you're done here" and stuff like that. Until I see a video of what happened, I'm not taking this as anything more than P.J. being stupid and getting too physical with someone else who was being physical. Get his ass to Charlotte, point towards our gym, and lock him in until Summer League.

    Damage report -

PJ is one dumb motherfucker.  After all the pre and post draft interviews where he talked about how he's matured, and how playing in the D-League taught him what it means to be a professional, this happens?  Get it together dude.

Get an apartment across the street from the arena, and never leave it unless you have practice or a game.

Stay out of the Triangle, and stay out of the Triad.

Lol say what you will, P.J.'s agent is pretty fucking good.

"P.J. did not go out and beat up a little kid like some people want to make it out to be"

Also, I guess this is good news, from the same ESPN article, according to P.J.'s agent:

Morrow said that he expects Hairston to join the team tomorrow in Charlotte for practice before accompanying the team to Las Vegas for summer league later this week.

Hopefully this goes nowhere. Just pointing fingers over two people saying different things. P.J.'s fucking stupid. I'm sure the coaches, management, and teammates are going to give it to him tomorrow at practice.
