PJ Hairston - YMCA Altercation

Seeing lots of posts on twitter saying that PJ punched a minor at a YMCA in Durham. Not sure how credible it is. Even if it is not true, it is disheartening that he would continue to be mentioned in things like this.

Yeah, its not a good idea to be playing pickup ball at the Y right before starting your new career, especially if you're under extra scrutiny.  If you're trying to reform your image to the general public, guess what you should probably not be involved with?

But.....what the hell kind of story is the kid trying to sell?  I've played with complete assholes and hotheads, and they don't just go up to somebody and punch them in the face, then go and punch them in the neck, unless there is some serious jawing  and tension thats been bubbling up over time, usually escalating into more physical play, and some pushing and shoving, and then finally it will get to your face and neck punching.

Not this, "oh excuse me sir, why did you pummel my face just so? Owwiess, why'd you punch my neck, hold me back bros! And make sure you film this for the vines."

Just say it was getting very competitive, you were giving PJ work, it got more heated and physical, yall both were assholes, and someone may have gotten baptized.

Now if this alleged video show otherwise, than I retract my statement fully.  But I've never seen things happen like that before.

I feel the likelihood is high that P.J. comes in with more wounds from his mother attacking him than that kid with a little bump on his head.

True, but when you have a NBA or big time college player, other guys will try to really give it to the guy and try to show him up.  It doesn't surprise me that this incident happened.  PJ just has to be smarter about who he is playing with.

Exactly. I think this blows over (pending an apparent video) relatively quickly. I've no problem with him playing pickup ball, but hopefully this will bring to light for him how big the target is on his back. There's a reason the Hornets' practice gym is open for runs for NBA guys in the offseason. I'm sure MJ, Cho & Co will inform PJ of that this morning.

If he is letting a high school kid get under his skin, wait until true NBA players start mounthing to him.  PJ better grow up or his stay in Charlotte will be short,

first, what the hell is PJ doing. i am thinking he came back to durham to go to the same party that josh gordon went to. the one hosted by the "fats" guy that PJ rented the car through in the first place. he is basically a local "power player" he used to take all the area (duke and unc) guys out to eat etc before the ncaa really started cracking down on that in the mid 2000's.

PJ needs to cut ties and just stay within 3 blocks of the practice facility and get all his basketball in there.

second, the kid he was fighting with is pretty good. similar size and will be at least a smaller D1 player. he is already getting looks from UNCW etc. this isn't just "some high school kid".

either way, PJ is on his last strike right now.

So guessing we don't want PJ in "attack mode" quite this way. ;)

Another thing that bothers me about this is doesn't he know how easy it is to break a hand or finger punching someone in the forehead?  The skull is really hard and punching someone in the head is a great way to screw up your hand for half a season.

I get the physicality of pick up games and not mad that PJ was being physical..... but it's at the freaking Y!!  Why be at the Y?  Can't really say anything that hasn't been expressed already. This is about as free of a gift as PJ can get as to cleaning up his act permanently.  He wasn't busted, arrested or anything on a felonious level, so take this as literally your last straw PJ.  You can only say that you've "matured" and "learned from mistakes" so many times before people think it's just saying what people want to hear.  You shouldn't be at the Y in an area close to where your crew runs.  You should be in Charlotte, or with Gary Neal or some veteran getting you focused for SL.  This could've been a lot worse, but damn, not the best way to clean up your image by beefin' with a HS kid.... nothing good can come of playing at the Y once you're drafted, outside of egotistical praise from your peers.

the only thing i'm upset about is the claim that PJ's team was losing.

I'd agree, unless we find out he used his right hand to throw the punch(es).

Am I the only one that wished that the morning broke to a contrite comment (even if it was simply relating to "being in the news"), not this? So far we have Spears, Bonnell, and the reporter from Durham - half of that is still 1.5 writers.
Just dont think he garners interest like that yet.
I've been playing pick up ball for years, Rec league, school, outside of school, all that.

Literally I play pick up ball every single day and not once have I fought anybody. I'm 20 years old now and I play against high schoolers all the time and not once have I ever got physical with them.

Also, I play against kids at all the local highschools in pickup games: jordan, northern, southern, etc. I'm born and raised in durham so If you know anything about durham you know there's ghetto people, you know there's upper class and middle class people. Diverse. People talk shit, that's just apart of the game. If someone is talking shit to me I just laugh it off and play the game, it's called maturity. If I act like that tell me why PJ doesnt look at it in that way? He's got a lot more to lose then I do.

This is probably what happened.. PJ came down to durham so he could show off and all his friends could be like "damn he's in the nba". PJ probably was feeling himself and wanted to show off his game..Then PJ probably wasn't playing serious, and the kid probably scored on him a couple times and started talking shit, PJ probably felt embarrassed and the kid probably got disrespectful, that's probably how everything popped off.
So PJ made the NBA section on yahoo.sports.com (http://sports.yahoo....24203--nba.html) - wonder how long the next kerfuffle will take to get from the AP wire to more populace sports press when there's not Free Agency, Summer League, and a pending court case for the LA Clippers.

You don't get the benefit of the doubt when you have a history of being a knuckle head.  You can't learn from your mistakes if you refuse to take responsibility.  If you f***ed up just call the kid and apologize.

Not defending him but how do we know he should call the kid and apologize? We don't know what happened.

And I am reading all this about pick up games and not ever seeing fights...you are playing at the nice courts evidently. Fights occur almost daily at certain courts. Period. Some kids go to the courts to pick fights more so than play ball sometimes.

Again, not defending PJ but until we know what happened, we don't know what happened:)

Also, please don't act like PJ is the only kid to play ball at the Y after he was drafted. Plenty of players do it...all the time.

I personally saw Antawn Jamison get into a shoving match with a kid in Charlotte playing pick up during the summer before he started at Carolina. I have seen multiple pro players get into shouting/shoving matches with non-NBA players during summer games including multiple old Hornets' players like JR Reid (happened at Woollen gym in Chapel Hill during the summer after he was on the Hornets), Rex Chapman (happened at UNCC's old gym on campus after he was drafted) and Johnny Newman (happened in pick up games in Charlotte at the downtown Y no less a couple of years after he was in the league).

Those are just the one's I remember off the top of my head that I actually saw. Believe me, it happens all the time.

Are we really ready to give PJ "his last straw" because he got into a scuffle on the basketball court during a pick up game? Damn...

    It's not a big deal guys...at all.

WAM, he simply should not be in the news - end of story. IF he were in the news, it should be for a break out game in Summer League or bathing stray kittens at the animal shelter - the guy should NOT be in the news.

Eh, pending video evidence to the contrary, it's nothing, and really doesn't bother me in the least.  It's pickup basketball.  I for one like that he is playing basketball, I really don't care where it is.

I'm not condoning punching, I mean come on PJ use your words like a big boy.   But basketball can get heated man.

I agree that he should not be in the news but let's judge this for what it is.

People are WAY over-reacting to this!

Evidently you didn't see that I said I'm FROM BORN AND RAISED in durham. Everybody knows the people that PJ hangs out with down here.

Everybody knows PJ and his crew. Everybody knows where PJ got arrested. Durham isn't Los Angeles.

lol I can also confirm that I went to highschool (I'm not in highschool) with a girl that slept with PJ. She was a senior and PJ was a sophomore at UNC. (she was a senior in HS). Which I don't even care about but it's funny just trying to let y'all know these people aren't as famous as you think. People see local players when they go out. It's not the craziest thing ever. Yes, they go out in public.

Y'all like to think of these nba players as god like figures..no. People know about them. He spends a lot of time in durham.
Ugh. Not what I wanna see on my twitter timeline this morning. Glad to see it doesn't seem to be a big deal tho.

Newsflash...I was born and raised in Durham as well. I sit in Durham as I type this. So what?

And what does who PJ slept with have anything to do with this? My sister's, best friends, uncle's neighbor said...

You seem to want to be the guy that has all the inside information on this when in reality, you aren't adding anything to the conversation that you can't read online.

I don't have any insider information you must be in ur 30s or something. Not saying anything is wrong with that but I'm saying I was around the time when all that stuff was going down (just because of my age) and everyone was talking about it.

I never wanted to sound like I had inside info. Bc everyone around here knows about this stuff.

Smh I also used that highschool thing as an example to show u that ppl know shit about PJ.

What part of durham are you located.

the plot thickens. pj was definitely back visiting/partying with "fats".

I'm not worried about the pickup scuffle. It's truly not a big deal. But the connections with Fats still and Josh Gordon? This is trouble. We need Al to take him under his wing this year. Don't let him out of his sights.

I posted this rumor in Pj's draft pick thread a few days ago. Some guy on reddit posted that he has family working at a news station and rumor was that Pj was in the car with Gordon and it may have been his car. Well turns out it was his car, whether Pj was in the car at the time we still don't know for sure. Pj had hell of a weekend, another "draft party" July 3rd, connections with Gordon/Fats July 4th, punches high schooler July 6th. Smh
