Game Thread: Charlotte Hornets at Los Angeles Lakers 11/9

The Lakers have had 4 days rest while the Hornets are coming off an exhausting double-OT win on Friday night to go along with having to travel across the country.

I don't think that will be enough to get the Lakers their first win of the season, but the Hornets will still need to be very, very careful Sunday night.

Questions of the night
  • Over/Under - 30 shots for Kobe tonight
  • The Lakers have no one to deal with Big Al - Over/Under 35 points for the lord of the left block
  • This game has real garbage time potential - will Biz see his first game action of the season
  • Who gets more minutes tonight Hendo or PJ
  • Over/Under 1.5 Lance Stephenson moments. You have no idea when they are coming, what they are going to be or even if they will be good or bad. But you can undoubtably recognize one when it happens

    1) Over.  Since this will be another lost season for the Lakers, I see Kobe just gunning for numbers to add to his legacy.

    2) Under.  He'll still get big numbers, but I think we'll spread the wealth much better now and not have to rely on Mac Daddy as much

    3) I don't know if Professor Clifford's lesson ends tonight.  He might sneak him in when everyone is watching football or asleep at night, so Rock Brunnell won't know he was in.

    4) Go Heels

    5) Lets see - ultracompetitive, asshole alpha dog Kobe v. ultracompetitve, take no prisoners, good kind of cray cray (so far) Lance.  I presume they will entail in a gentlemanly duel of peach basket toss, politely exchanging possessions to allow each other the pleasure of securing success of the field goal throw.

I want to blow out the Lakers in their house.  The "come from behind in the 4th" thing is fun and all but for the sake of my blood pressure this time let's make the outcome known in the 2nd quarter...k?

Really looking forward to this one.  Keep the momentum rolling on the road, and continue the Lakers tailspin.

    • Over/Under - 30 shots for Kobe tonight-Under but  barely.  28 shots.
    • The Lakers have no one to deal with Big Al - Over/Under 35 points for the lord of the left block-Under.  I'd say Al drops about 25.  Kemba goes for 22 or more to relieve some of the pressure on Al.
    • This game has real garbage time potential - will Biz see his first game action of the season-Against all reason, I will say yes, Biz sees some action tonight.
    • Who gets more minutes tonight Hendo or PJ-PJ gets more minutes, and gets off the bench first, if Hendo plays at all.
    • Over/Under 1.5 Lance Stephenson moments. You have no idea when they are coming, what they are going to be or even if they will be good or bad. But you can undoubtably recognize one when it happens-Over.  This one's easy.

I would put MKG on Kobe tonight after Lance's recent defensive performances. Lance would then have to guard Wesley Johnson which is a MUCH easier cover

I still remember last year's game where Al wore them out for 40 and Danny Trejo came up to him during Stephanie's interview and was giving him dap...awesome!!!

    1. Under

    2. Under but he could go for another 40 if he wanted it.

    3. Nope. Not. Gonna. Happen.

    4. Peej

    5. Gotta go over here.  Coming off the Sportscenter top moment Friday, playing in LA...yeah, over.

I'm finally back boys. Nice to see SC and the Panthers suck. How's things going with the Bees?

Were at .500 but the excitement of the games this year has been unlike any other season.

Nice little run to close out the half. LA got close but Charlotte went back up 9 by the buzzer. Good lead to bring into the third frame.

Happy with the first half and the 9 pt lead.  But I have an early morning so have to hit the bed.  Just hoping I wake up to see a Hornet's victory on the computer in the morning.

Nice half.  Keep the pressure on.

    Lance on triple double watch.

Pathetic effort. Now staring 3-7 right in the face
    Bizmack unchained

Henderson is on the same rotation as Biz.  Yikes.

Apparently, the Lakers found a way to limit Al by assigning him to the defender known as Charity Stripe.  Mr Stripe really had his way with lots of Hornets tonight.

Game was freaking awful. Couldn't get anything to go from the stripe and our defense couldn't stop a freaking thing. Hoping this is just a case of jet lag but this was bad.

Although this tweet makes it not as bad..

Embarrassing effort results in an embarrassing loss. I get the difference in rest between the two teams, and I do think that played a part, but you can't play that way and expect to win games. Lack of ball movement on offense and waaaay too many open Laker shots on defense settled this one. They best correct this quick, or this will be an ugly road trip.

Clifford must make the guys take a nap at halftime.  I swear we come out slow as molasses to start the 3rd qtr way too often.  Got outscored by 21 last night when we played so strong in the 1st half.  Why does this happen so often?  We cannot keep rallying in the 4th.  We need to come out strong in the 3rd.  Clifford has to change something we are doing at the half because it does not work.

It's losses like this that will come back to haunt them at the end of the season when they are fighting for playoff positioning.

Remember how that Celtics loss last year affected us?

One other question: What was going on with MKG last night?

24 minutes. But only 3 points and 1 rebound??

Feels like our starting line up is broken. The MKG-Lance pairing is not working and their skillsets seem really redundant right now - good rebounders and decent at getting in the lane but jump shots the opponents aren't respecting at all. It actually seems teams are more worried about MKG's jumper than Lance's right now.

I'm not sure if this is something that will fix itself naturally (hard to believe that Lance will shoot this poorly deep into the season) or if it needs tinkering. Pairing up Gary Neal with either Lance or MKG at the small forward position has helped our offense so much. Maybe getting him in the game earlier or even starting him is the cure for this anemic offense.

Guys the Lakers shot 71% in the 3rd. Carlos Boozer turned back the clock to 2005, and even Robert Sacre was hitting turnaround fadeaway jumpers. It happens. Remember we were the Lakers just a couple of years ago, and we'd have one of those magical nights in a 7 win season when we beat someone. No need to overreact too much, I'm more interested in seeing how we bounce back against a tough Portland team tomorrow night.

When I think about this game I immediately start having flashbacks to last years west coast trip when we faced the traiblazers at Portland....
