It is indeed true.  Shocked me when I was flipping through and saw it.  Very, very good article by Lee Jenkins.  A must-read.

Lee Jenkins is the shit.   I haven't seen the article yet, but if it wasn't already a lock to read it... it is now.

Lee Jenkins really is fantastic. I need to pick up the issue. Beagle, what was the gist of the article?

Lee Jenkins: Work In Progress

For many players a 19-foot jumper and a smooth postgame interview would be nothing to blink at. For Michael Kidd-Gilchrist it represented a culmination of a lifetime of hard work. Recruiting for Kidd-Gilchrist started when he was seven; at 12 he was friends with Jay-Z and his middle school team was sponsored by Reebok. He played alongside No.1 pick Kyrie Irving in high school and alongside No.1 pick Anthony Davis in college. He won a national championship in 2012 and was selected No.2 overall by the Hornets in the NBA draft. But while Davis and Irving thrived in the NBA and gained All-Star status, Kidd-Gilchrist struggled to find his identity. He enlisted the help of shooting guru Mark Price to fix his erratic shot and mend his confidence while he also sought assistance from a speech pathologist to help him with his stutter. At age 21 he has overhauled so many things about himself during his long journey that he is at last comfortable with where he is makes that jumper and his perfect post-game interview that much sweeter.

“What I saw was a tenacious defender who could get to the basket and a motor that would not shut off. I thought, if there is a way to improve the shot, this kid is going to find it.” – Charlotte general manager Rod Higgins

“Everybody has flaws, and I’m a prime example, but this is me. I’ve come a long way. Everyone can see it. I can see it myself.”- Michael Kidd- Gilchrist

What an impressive, mature guy.  I have always thought the ability to ask for help is huge and requires one to swallow a lot of pride, particularly at the level he's at.  And to do so with both shooting and speech, two pretty important things in his career choice.  Can you imagine being a pro basketball player and being told not to shoot or practicing your "p's"?  Pride would've overcame most and they would've quit.

Keep it up MKG.  Nice job.

Damn, never realized how rough he had it growing up. Probably a big part of his personal and professional tenacity.

Really well written story. Illustrates why I love MKG for my team and want him to spend his entire career here

That was a great article. MKG has looked and sounded so much better this season. I can't name a guy in the NBA that I want to root for more.

Man he has such a sad story.  But he is the living embodiment of persistence and perseverance.

Knowing how much The Lion King meant to MKG and his father, how he always saw his dad as Mufasa and him as Simba, I kinda did a little tribute image.  Not sure how I feel - is it cool, or kinda cheesy?

I'm pretty sure it's cheesy in the best way possible.
